Top Selection

The Substance Film

Director Coralie Fargeat's bold satire tackles the tyranny of women's appearance along with the perceived horrors of advancing years. The veteran actress delivers a brilliant acting turn in the role of Elisabeth, an aging film star forced into presenting an aerobics show on the small screen. Pushed out due to her deceitful superior her manager Harvey, she undergoes an enigmatic and terrifying treatment known as "The Substance". This produces a younger clone portrayed by Margaret Qualley, resulting in a progressively vampiric relationship between them. This Friday, the streaming service Paramount+

The Woman in Cabin 10 Film

This Agatha Christie-esque thriller stars Knightley as Laura, an ace reporter who opts for a break from writing about global conflict to embark on an opulent ship alongside a terminally ill Scandinavian billionaire and philanthropist, her partner, plus additional filthy rich guests. Yet once a mysterious woman disappears from the ship overnight and everyone claims she was never there, the reporter's sleuthing skills awaken. Streaming currently, Netflix

This Supernatural Story

Soderbergh challenges his creative boundaries with this innovative supernatural story filmed completely from the perspective of a ghost. When a household featuring mother Rebekah plus Callina Liang as Chloe occupies their new suburban house, the camera – representing the ghost – tracks their movements. Chloe seems sensing the ghostly being, and it looks like defensive toward her. Yet what is the reason? The premise is enjoyable that remains concise, featuring a surprise you might not see coming. Saturday 11 October, afternoon and evening times, Sky Cinema

The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent

The iconic actor wholeheartedly adopts his cult stardom in this meta comedy caper. He portrays a self-obsessed celebrity called Nicolas Cage who takes on a lucrative offer to attend a birthday party on the Spanish island for billionaire Javi Gutierrez. Hired by government spies to investigate the potential kingpin, Cage's unconventional method is put to the test. Saturday 11 October, 9pm, Channel 4

The Black Phone Horror

Scott Derrickson's locked-room horror remains effective despite the lack of a sequel. Set in 1970s Colorado, several kidnappings has made the youth anxious. After Finney gets captured by the kidnapper and held captive in a dungeon, he fears a terrible outcome. But the old telephone in the room keeps ringing, with eerie communicators offering help, and the intuitive nightmares of his sister Gwen may be his salvation. A genuinely scary movie. October 11th, 10.50pm, on Film4

The Tammy Faye Biopic

In the battle between God and Mammon, it's a knockout win for greed in this director's delightfully tacky biopic about the fallen TV preacher and her criminal husband. The actor plays the greedy Jim, who declares initially, claiming divine approval for wealth. Both individuals commence profiting from the people's spiritual convictions. It's a spectacle of tacky decor, overdone appearance and bad faith, however Chastain manages to present the character in a likable light. Next Tuesday, early morning, Film4

The Spy Mystery

This week's additional entry by the same director presents a intelligence thriller as precise like the turtlenecks sported by Fassbender's intelligence officer. He is tasked with uncovering a mole within their ranks out of five possibilities – one of whom is Kathryn, played by Cate Blanchett. The two stars are masters of calm composure, so a delicious psychological game of deception or honesty develops. Tom Burke, Regé-Jean Page, Naomie Harris and Marisa Abela take part the clever spy entertainment. October 17th, 8.05am, 12.55pm, 8pm, Sky Cinema
