We present a challenge for long-term couples who appreciate horror films: Get comfortable with your significant other and watch Together. The independent film success of 2025 has now made its streaming debut on the Hulu service. Outwardly, it could look like conventional body horror, but beneath Together resides a deep contemplation about how we choose to love each other.
A Directorial Debut Investigating Partnership Complexities
Together is the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for a decade. Having wed in actuality in 2017, the two stars bring a special spark to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.
The narrative starts when the couple relocate from the urban environment to the countryside for professional reasons. A familiar story element, of course, but that’s mostly where the cliches cease. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a film about physical terror.
An Otherworldly Trigger
While trekking near their new home, a tempest descends, and the two discover an subterranean cavern. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a supernatural entity starts to affect the duo. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past simple connection.
The whole movie is a gradually intensifying horror experience, interspersing bits of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but tastefully done) body horror, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes amidst something disturbing). Michael Shanks weaves these elements together expertly and delivers them in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.
Complex Characterizations
A great deal of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render numerous complexities to the characters’ relationship. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is waning due to a emotional and physical gap. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his floundering music career gradually emerges.
Tim, on the other hand experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve left the city and removed from his support system. He fears the idea of utterly sacrificing his personal autonomy in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the reality he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for mobility.
Shanks’ smartest move in Together never makes either of his characters the clear bad guy.
Tim and Millie grapple with the type of challenges that arise in long-term unions after ten years. Fundamentally, they still love each other. They still laugh together, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But under the surface, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their relationship.
Symbolism and Metaphor
While the supernatural forces in Together act as a metaphor for these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to another person, the symbolism never feels overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other symbiotically.
A Debated Finale
Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. Accounts suggest that single viewers have seen the movie as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. On the other hand, some couples having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.
Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could act as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the finale sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your other half and say, “I’d do that for you”?
Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can undertake at this very moment.
Together is available to watch on Hulu's platform at present.
