In a notable move ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the aftermath of widespread and fatal young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the incumbent government.
A Pledge to Tackle Young People's Demands
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which resulted in significant loss of life.
"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.
The September revolt was sparked by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from years of slow growth and persistent allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.
Terms of the New Political Partnership
According to the formal pact, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread discontent with the country's older political class. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in forming the interim government that took over after the previous administration was removed.
Broader Government Discussions Underway
In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister recently held consultations with a number of leading political leaders. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the presidents of other major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the period of the protests.
After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a credible election is a shared duty. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and fear-free environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
