Historical racial prejudice is returning to UK the political arena, which leaves citizens very scared, Keir Starmer emphasized, alerting that divisive hard-right politics was “tearing our country apart”.

Tackling Racist Rhetoric and Divisive Strategies

In conversation with GP and TV personality Amir Khan, the prime minister accused Nigel Farage’s Reform UK of overseeing a return to discriminatory and divisive politics which many believed was resolved long ago”.

During the discussion, which aired on ITV’s Lorraine show on Tuesday, the PM also gave a clear indication that the two-child benefit cap would be lifted in the budget later this month.

Promise to Reduce Poverty Among Children

When questioned whether he would scrap this restriction, which charities have said is the biggest driver of poverty for children across Britain, Starmer said: “I want to state unequivocally I will strive to reduce child poverty.”

He listed measures ministers have already introduced including free school meals, morning meal programs, and childcare and emphasized: “Further action is necessary, and I pledge and tell you I am dedicated to cutting child poverty.”

Pressed on whether his remarks meant he intended to remove the two-child cap, Starmer stated “I would not say we plan to reduce poverty among children if I wasn’t clear that we will implement a number of measures in order to do so”.

Clear Signals from Rachel Reeves

The Chancellor, gave a similarly clear signal on Monday when she told BBC Radio 5 Live that ultimately, children must not be punished because their parents don’t have very much money”.

Government officials are getting ready to remove the cap completely, having originally looked at phasing it out either for very large families or wealthier families. An economic thinktank projects the expense would be about £3.5bn by 2029-30.

Ideological Split and National Renewal

During the discussion, the Prime Minister explained the ideological split currently in Britain existed between Labour’s “patriotic national renewal” versus Reform’s harmful divisiveness and others on the right who were “dividing the nation”.

“Parts of the discourse currently circulating – discriminatory talk, polarizing language – that many assumed was resolved decades ago is coming back into politics and citizens are very scared,” he stated.

“It is essential to oppose such discrimination, that division, and affirm with pride that to be British means showing empathy, is about being fair, is to be tolerant and kindness, and this is our pride.”

Echoing Concerns from Wes Streeting

The prime minister echoed language expressed by Wes Streeting, who cautioned recently that an “ugly” racism similar to past decades was now worryingly commonplace once more with NHS staff were primary targets of this trend.

Streeting noted incidents of both verbal and physical attacks targeting individuals due to race had become so frequent making it “acceptable to express racism”.

“We must end to discrimination in this country and we need to place such harmful attitudes that has emerged in our country back in its box and once again create a climate in this country that rejects racism to hold racist views,” the Health Secretary said.

Critical Decision for Voters

The Prime Minister used his speech at the Labour party conference this autumn to draw clear divisions with his political opponents, saying that the public confronted a “defining choice”.

He said he was engaged in a “fight for the soul of our country”, and argued that while the public had “reasonable” concerns regarding unauthorized immigration, existed an ethical boundary that Farage and others had crossed.

The PM pledged to confront those who argued that non-white individuals did not belong and that families residing in Britain for years must be removed, saying people promoting such views were “against national unity”.

“If you incite racial attacks and hatred, that goes beyond concern: it is illegal. This party – this great party – values national symbols, but if they are displayed with hateful messages, telling a Chinese takeaway owner to ‘go home’, that is not patriotism; that’s racism,” he told activists.
